A climatic piece of old Somerset: an empty Tudor manor home, magnificently brought back in the 1920s, with farm buildings, abundant flowers and orchards.

There’s a sense of flexibility when you visit Barrington Court. The absence of a collection allows you the space and point of view to discover the soul of this house, and feel the love and passion that entered into its restoration.

Among the Court’s most spectacular functions is the long gallery. It runs the length of the attic floor, and in Tudor times would have provided a space for indoor workout. When Canon Rawnsley went to the house in 1907, he described the long gallery as being ‘loaded with holes, offering a great home for owls’.

Colonel Lyle restored the walls utilizing his incredible collection of panelling, and numerous pieces consist of fantastic examples of marquetry. A few of the most intriguing appear to be half-hidden inlaid signs and indications. Look out for the skull and crossbones and the axeman’s block, but there are many more to find.

The famous garden designer, Gertrude Jekyll, was consulted by Colonel Lyle’s better half, Elsie, on the design and finest planting schemes for the garden. At the time, Jekyll was well into her seventies and nearly blind, but she had the ability to advise what would grow best in the limy earth simply by crumbling the soil, which was sent to her in biscuit tins. Elsie Lyle visited Jekyll to discuss the plans for the garden in person, and much of exactly what you see today was motivated by these earlier strategies.

House grown
Traditionally the kitchen area garden was the larder of any country home. Our cooking area garden is a working gem, and it still fulfils its original function of offering fresh fruit and veg for our dining establishment. There are huge pumpkins, curious decorative gourds, kale and cabbages, and with a little luck, some late raspberries.

The herbaceous borders that run down the orchard side of the kitchen garden are a riot of fall colour with the asters and michaelmas daisies looking especially cheerful.

A home with a moat
Pausing for a minute and glancing into the moat can be very rewarding as you’re most likely to spot plenty wildlife, from ducks to dragonflies. The moat needs regular raking to keep the water clear.

Rose and iris garden
A bridge leads you over the moat and through a carved and weathered oak door to the stunning walled garden The spaces here are arranged as a series of linked specific garden ‘rooms’, each with its own theme or focus. The garden team is dividing up last of the irises at the minute – a job that is done every 4 years after they have actually completed blooming.

Renovation of the rose beds occurred during 2017 and they are now securely developed, with the fantastic floral displays of Rosa ‘Felicia’, ‘Cornelia’ and’ Penelope’ (to call but a few) at their height previously in the summertime. Autumn is when you’ll see the team deep in the beds pruning whatever.

Lily garden.
The largest of the gardens and the very first to be planted, the Lily Garden remains closest of all to Gertude’s designs for Barrington Court, with planting that is abundant and altering. Another job to keep the team busy over the coming weeks is lifting the dahlias so they can be kept over winter.

The pergola walk
The brick and wood pergola was created by our existing head garden enthusiast, Christine Brain, along with Andrew Lyle in the 1980s. This beautiful function covers the course from the busstalls to the White Garden, and there are many wonderful, well-established climbing plants growing over it.

Make certain to visit this incredible court in the heart of Somerset.
Restored, unfurnished Tudor mansion set in colourful gardens, with a walled orchard and restaurant.

The Story of Chard Museum
Chard’s First Museum
Chard had its very first ‘museum’ in 1880. Arthur Hull, a regional male, had developed a collection of ‘curiosities’ while working as a property surveyor in the location and left them to Chard Town Council when he died.
His collection was placed on display screen in the Town Hall however attracted little interest and began to weaken so it was handed over to Somerset County Museum in Taunton in 1917.
Chard and District Museum
The Arthur Hull collection stayed there for the next fifty years until a newly-formed Chard History Group started to project for a museum in Chard to celebrate the story of the town.
The Town Council bought a run-down 16th century building in High Street, which had actually previously been 4 cottages, and offered the restored building to a brand-new ‘Museum Council’. This building, now referred to as Godworthy Home, was the first house of Chard Museum

Godworthy Home and the New Inn circa 1967
Much of the Arthur Hull collection was returned from Taunton and Chard and District Museum opened for the very first time on 20th July, 1970. The Museum grew quickly and soon needed to expand.
Next door to the Museum a bar called the New Inn had actually closed and this too was purchased by the Town and rented to the Museum.
For several years farming equipment had actually been made in Chard and examples began to be added to the Museum’s collections. By now display area was getting really restricted so a brand-new open-sided structure, the ‘Barn’, was built in the late 1980s. This was soon confined to make a weatherproof display area.
In 1994 the Town Council kindly offered the Museum the use of an open space behind the Barn and this field now contains numerous other examples of locally produced farming devices.

Chard Museum is a registered charity (No. 270186) established in 1970. It is managed by a group of Trustees who, like all the workers involved with the Museum, are unpaid volunteers.First registered under the Museums and Galleries Registration Scheme in 1990, it was granted complete Accreditation in April, 2006, one of the very first volunteer-run museums in the South West to receive this recognition. The Museum & Heritage Centre exhibits have been expanded and improved progressively throughout the years and contain a number of collections of nationwide importance including those of John Stringfellow (1799-1883), an early leader of powered flight, and James Gillingham (1839-1924) who was an essential maker of synthetic limbs.

Fri, 21 Sep 2018 18:13:59 +0000 The Guildhall Chard Somerset

The Guildhall is a Quality II Listed Structure in the centre of the town that goes back to 1837 as well as was formerly the Corn Exchange. It is positioned on the site of previous municipal buildings as well as a market from the late 18th century. Much work has actually been done with significant renovations beginning in 1998 as well as being completed and reopened in 2003 with economic help from the Heritage Lottery Fund. The intent of the redevelopment job was to make certain the structure has long-term sustainability as an area source along with to handle this historic possession in one of the most suitable manner.

The Guildhall facility is made use of largely as a community structure for a vast array of activities as well as in 2009 it came to be the base for Chard Community Council. It is an essential civic building and houses the Mayor’s Parlour and also Community Council workplaces.

Chard is a historic market town snuggled within the glorious countryside of South Somerset, close to the Devon as well as Dorset boundaries.

Chard is the 2nd biggest town in South Somerset with a populace of approximately 14,000. At 121 metres (397ft) above sea level it is both the southernmost and one of the highest situated communities in Somerset.

People have been residing in the Chard area since primitive times and villas nearby at Tatworth and Wadeford show that Romans lived here as well, yet the very first composed mention of the town was in 1065 simply before the Norman intrusion. A little over twenty years later on the Doomsday Publication videotaped details of the negotiation which was then a huge, though not abundant, manor.

In the middle of the 13th century the lord of the manor, the Bishop of Wells, created a charter establishing a brand-new district of Chard. The site of the initial town, now known as Old Town, was near St Mary’s Church yet the brand-new district was developed a little distance away on just what is currently the A30.

Like lots of towns in England, Chard came to be carefully involved in the wool trade. The rise of the woollen trade in the north of England badly impacted the market in Chard yet in 1819 the manufacture of lace arrived. Soon there were mills around Chard generating bobbin lace net which was exported worldwide.

The industry continued throughout the remainder of the 19th century as well as right into the middle of the 20th century when the last mill in the town ultimately shut, although net is still made in one of the close-by villages. A prospering design market matured together with the shoelace mills and also several of the firms which established from this are still operating in Chard today.

You can uncover a lot more about our town’s history in Chard Museum located in Godworthy House, High Road, Chard or by checking out the Local Information Centre at The Guildhall.

Chard is easy to find, positioned on the primary London– Exeter route, so why not stop off at one of the Cafes, Pubs or Restaurants, visit the Antiques, Vintage, Collectables & Craft Market or relax by Chard Reservoir– just a few of the things Chard has to offer.

iMac Upgrade Hard Drive

There are a few upgrades that can be carried out on an iMac but the iMac Hard Drive upgrade can add some life to an older iMac. Not only by adding extra space but also speed. Upgrading to a Hybrid SSD/HDD or a true SSD(Solid State Hard Drive) can give your ageing iMac or MacBook a fantastic speed boost. Add in some extra RAM memory and it would be like new again.

2009 iMac Upgrade to Hybrid SSD

Recently we carried out a Hybrid SSD Drive upgrade on a 2009 iMac. We thought that we would show you what goes on with your iMac or MacBook when it comes in for an upgrade.

iMac Hard Drive full

Below shows the iMac hard drive when it came in. As you can see it was time to upgrade!

iMac with Glass Removed

With the glass removed we now have access to the LCD panel.

Dust in the machine!

No matter how clean of a working space your iMac or MacBook lives in over the years  they collect lots of dust. Ideally this should be cleaned out every year to make sure your iMac or MacBook has the optimal of air flow over the important parts like the CPU and Graphics card. This will help to increase the life of your Apple device.

Next we remove the LCD panel

Behind the LCD panel on a Apple iMac you gain access to the hard drive. It is not really advisable to attempt this upgrade yourself without a lot of research. The power supply in the top right holds a charge for many hours even if the iMac is turned off and unplugged. This can give you a nasty shock!!

At last we find the hard drive!

As you can see there is quite a process in getting to the hard drive on an iMac.

The new Hybrid SSD

Here is the hard drive that we decided would be best for this upgrade. A hybrid ssd is a blend of  two types of drives adding a large amount of space and a speed boost and less expensive than a large sized SSD.

Back on with the LCD

Next we replace the LCD panel in to the case and connect the cables from LCD to logic board. This is just to test everything is working prior putting the aluminium case back on.

Reinstalling OS X to the iMac

Next we install the chosen version of OS X that the client has asked for. Some iMac’s are unable to run the very latest OS X version. We will advise on the best OS X for your model.

iMac & MacBook Upgrade Service

Here at Combe Wood Computers we are only too happy to supply advice on the best upgrades to suit your iMac or MacBook. Once we have established what would be the best upgrade for your needs we would book in your Apple device at a time to suits you and keep you informed along the way on how things are going.

Upgrade iMac Late 2009 SSD

Below you will find one of our clients iMac’s that had run out of space and become very slow indeed. The hard drive was full to the brim with files. We advised to upgrade the hard drive to a much bigger one. Rather than choose a true solid state hard drive upgrade we thought that a Hybrid SSD would be better and keep the price down!

Removing the 2009 iMac Glass

Below you can see how we use glass removal suckers to remove the glass iMac front.

Removing the aluminium iMac case

The aluminium iMac case is held on to the main shell by a selection of screws.

In extreme cases

We clean out your iMac or MacBook of dust. Making sure all fans and vents are free of dust. In extreme cases where the device may have overheating issue we would also remove the logic board and clean the old thermal compound from the CPU and GPU and replace it with brand new.

Yet another fan

There is another fan on the 2009 iMac behind the LCD that will also require cleaning out.

On other models the fans are in other places and this is in now way a How To guide, we just wanted to show you what goes on here at Combe Wood Computers.

Out with the old..

We then remove your old hard drive. Yet more screws holding it in place with anti vibration rubbers.

The drive in its new home

The hybrid hard drive is now in place.

The same rubber anti vibration screws can be used again. The process is slightly different if installing a true SSD in a iMac, these are smaller and require a bracket.

All working fine

With the iMac tested and working we put the aluminium case back on and carefully put the glass on too. This has to be done very carefully making sure not to trap any dust between the glass and LCD.

All ready for collection

Well here we have it a 2009 iMac upgraded from a 320gb hard drive to a 1TB hybrid hard drive adding both space and speed. All ready now for our client to collect and enjoy the added boost.

Looking for an upgrade ?

If you are looking to upgrade your iMac or MacBook then please give us a call. Depending on the hardware required for the upgrade prices start at £100 including parts.

iMac Servicing

We also offer MacBook and iMac servicing. This would include a full strip down cleaning all internal parts and applying thermal compound to the vital components. In turn this will prolong the life of your Apple device.

Macbook Service Somerset | Overheating Macbook

Today we had a 2009 Apple Macbook in the workshop for a service. The customer said that they noticed that the fans were running more and more and it was feeling quite warm after it had been on for a while. Now it’s not just the Macbook or Macbook Pro that suffers from dust. All laptops and computers get dusty fans overtime.
The dust gets pulled in by the cooling fans and starts to accumulate on the fan blades and vents and even starts to build up on the actual heat sinks or the Macbook or computer. This stops the fans from doing their job and keeping your expensive iMac, Macbook or Windows laptop staying nice and cool.
If you continue to use your computer with the fans running at full speed you will start to run the risk of burning something out inside of the computer.

Not only is there a chance of cooking your Macbook’s CPU or GPU (graphics chip) you may also lose all of your data if it has not been backed up for a while. I thought I would take some photographs of what we found inside of this Macbook today and share with you.

macbook service

After we carefully removed the macbook’s keyboard and trackpad we get to have our first peek at what we are dealing with here.

macbook service somerset

It all looks very innocent in there with nothing obviously blocking the fans, there is some dust showing on the fan blades so next we will remove the heatsink and fan to inspect further.

macbook service somerset

The above image shows the old thermal paste on the heatsink. When removing the heatsink from any CPU/GPU we always clean the old paste off and reapply fresh thermal paste. This paste looks like it has seen better days and replacing will help prolong the Macbook’s CPU and GPU lifetime.

macbook service somersetmacbook service somerset

Above are pictures of the now cleaned CPU, GPU and ready to apply the new thermal paste. As you can see we only use Arctic Silver paste, we find it gives us the best results in keeping components cool. Always apply your thermal paste to the chips and not to the heatsink, you can find out more about this here

macbook service somerset

So here it is, the cooling grill on the heatsink is full of dust and pet hair! Now we had the lovely job of cleaning this out. We took the fan outside and blasted it off with some compressed air. Below you can see the cleaned grill and fan all ready to be installed back into the Macbook.

macbook service somerset

So there we have it all cleaned, thermal paste replaced and ready to put back together.

Fri, 19 Jan 2018 13:25:08 +0000 Five Reasons Why You Should Have A Website

Five Reasons – Why Have A Website

So why have a website ? I am going to share some tips on how to get going with blogging and websites.

I’ve been working from home for about eight years now setting up websites and doing affiliate marketing and that’s what I will be sharing with you.

why have a website

Why Have A Website

It’s essential in today’s world no matter what business you’re in you will need a website, let me explain why let me give you five reasons to why you need to have a website and why it’s essential.

The first reason why you should have a website is to look professional. Having your own website will allow you and your business to look professional even if you do business on other platforms say Etsy or eBay or Amazon having your own site will create trust with your customers.

The second reason why it’s essential to have your own website is so that you can tell your story we engage and communicate with people we can relate to again. Even if you’re on other platforms having your own site to share your story in any way shape or form you would like is very important. If we use Etsy an example, this is a great way to get going on the internet and selling your products but they give you a very limited space to share what you and your business are about. This space will be unlimited on your own site! I’m not saying to get rid of Etsy I’m saying add a website to your Etsy store for example.

Third reason to why having a website is essential is so that you can claim your spot your corner on the internet. Look at it as your property your investment for the future.

why have a website

Reason number four on why have a website, can you afford not to have a website ? If you’re running a business and are not having your own site how much money are you leaving on the table ? Think about that for a second, if you’re in another platform but don’t have a site how much money are you missing out on ? What if you have a business idea but you’re not taking action starting that site, how much money are you losing each and every day by not taking the step and getting that site set up?
I love numbers so let’s take a look at some. Let’s say that you have 20 visitors to your site a day this is a very low number but we all have to start somewhere, so that would give us about 600 visitors a month again like I said very low number. Say that you’re offering a product where you make twenty-five pounds per sale. Let’s say that two percent converts into a purchase, six hundred visitors, two percent, that’s twelve sales. Conversion could be a lot higher but when starting out you’re testing things.  12 sales times £25 is £300 monthly this is three hundred pounds that you would be leaving on the table when your visitors go to your website. Over time it will grow and when the visitor number grows so will your sales. We can also help you get more visitors to your website take a look at our SEO Somerset page for more details on this. So how much are you leaving on the table by NOT having a website ?

Reason number five to having your own website is that it will put you in one hundred percent control. if you are relying on other websites other platforms you’re playing by their rules, if you have your own site you are in charge, you decide what goes on on that site, you decide how to get traffic to your website, you decide what content goes on your site and you decide how to make money with it. You decide to design the look of it, you are in control it’s your site your rules.

So there are five reasons to why you should have a website or blog. Reason number one is essential, it will make you look professional, it will allow you to tell your story and it will allow you to claim your corner of the Internet.

why you need a website

Thu, 04 Jan 2018 13:12:31 +0000 Do I Need A Website ?

A question I get asked a lot is can a small business get away with just using Facebook and not worry about having a website built ? Do I Require A Website ?
This is a fantastic question especially in this Facebook drunk world where everybody is on Facebook butDo I Require A Website the reality is I highly discourage people from just using a Facebook page. Now here’s the reason why a lot of business misinterpret the purpose of Facebook. You go into a cafe or a restaurant they’re always saying like us on Facebook which is good because they’re able to keep in touch with you but some businesses think that Facebook likes are the end game. That’s just one level to a deeper sales funnel that’s going to get people to your website. Now if you can get them to your website you can then influence them or have more control over the influence of that experience and hopefully drive them closer to the sale of becoming a new client that’s the end goal. So Facebook is good it’s a great tool but it’s not the end game for your online platform. Also what if Facebook decided to close your account for some reason or another, you have No control over that.

Maybe You Don’t Need A Website

Let’s explore a couple of scenarios where maybe you don’t need a website. As a multitasking small business owner perhaps you enjoy your busy daily routine being constantly interrupted answering questions like “what time do you open” “are you closed on Saturdays” “do you offer these particular kinds of products and services” ?.
Perhaps you are not looking to generate any awareness about your brand, about your business who you are, what you do, what makes you unique and above that perhaps you are not looking to grow your business in any measurable way shape or form.

Now if you enjoy making your life more difficult than it needs to be and you have no desire to generate any awareness about what you do then I don’t suppose a website would be of any benefit to you.

I really hope that you are not the type of business that likes to make life more difficult and has no desire to grow at all…

What Your Website Design Can Offer

Let’s talk about how a website can help. I expect you can probably see where we’re going here now however before we go on let’s take a look at a couple of numbers.
Did you know that over 80% of Europeans will go online to do research about products and services they’re interested in.
Additionally did you know that of the billions of searches on Google every month that one in five are local searches(eg. website design Chard Somerset) now these are numbers that you as a small business owner cannot afford to ignore.

So why do you need a website ? Three big reasons:

  • Number one, your customers demanded it. Your website is a 365 day a year 24/7 open for business portal and your new and existing customers expect to be able to find you there.

  • Number two, a website makes your life easy. It allows you to communicate to these customers who you are what you do and what types of products and services you offer.

  • Number three, your competition have websites. Whether you realise it or not every day you are giving up market share to your competitors who have a website.Having a website great idea but is just any website going to work ? Next I will explain why having the right website is important.

The Right Website For You

By now you know that I like lists and coming up is a list of our top 5 tips for the right website for you and your business:

  • Number One, on our list is your website content. It is very important what your website says about your business. It is crucial your website content needs to have a clear purpose and concise call to action. What do you want your web site visitors to do ? Do you want them to call you ? Do you want them to fill out some information about themselves? Do you want them to just simply get to know a little bit more about what you do ? Website content is king right from the mouth of google.

  • Number Two, Visual appeal. These days having a professionally designed and professional looking website design that installs confidence and trust is absolutely essential. You want your visitors to feel comfortable on your website.

  • Number Three, Fundamental SEO. Now SEO stems in to a whole other area and you can find out more about SEO here on our SEO Services page. Fundamental SEO means communicating to search engines very clearly. A couple of very important things namely, the name of your business, your phone number, your geographical location and other fundamentals like the exact nature of the types of products and services that you offer. So fundamental SEO literally is what separates the men from the boys in the world of Google.

  • Number Four, Speed and usability. This is another factor that is increasing in importance with having the right website. Having a website that loads quickly and is easy to use and understand for your visitors is absolutely crucial. What did you do the last time a website was slow to load ? Went back to Google and found another that worked ?
